What the prices in this list mean

The table records the asking price shown for a particular dealer listing on 29 September 2026. It does not report what a buyer eventually paid. The same catalog number can appear at very different prices when centering, gum, cancellation, faults, shade, perforation, or certificates differ. A listing may sell, be withdrawn, or change price after our check.

The 201 examples cover nineteen countries and issues dated from 1840 through 1952. They are a practical lookup sample, not a complete catalog of every issue. Issue descriptions retain short English seller terms to make cross-checking the linked record easier. The country, issue year and Scott reference are search fields; the source link shows the exact listed item. Why an old stamp has no single fixed price

First identify the exact issue. Two stamps with the same design may have different perforations, watermarks, paper, color shades or overprints. A visually close match can therefore point to the wrong catalog entry. Our catalog-number guide explains a systematic comparison.

Next compare the physical specimen. A mint stamp with original gum is not equivalent to a regummed or hinged example. Finally distinguish a retail offer from a sale. The Smithsonian notes that catalog values are generally dealer retail references, not the amount a collector receives when selling. How to use the searchable price table

Type a country, denomination, issue name, year or Scott number into the search box. A Scott number is useful only after the country and variety are verified. Choose a country to narrow the list. Open the source listing and inspect the dealer’s full condition notes, especially where the row tells you to check faults.

If the issue is absent, do not infer that it is rare or worthless. This selection is a starting point, and the seller may have changed its inventory. Search a current dealer catalog, a specialist auction archive and recent sold listings for the exact variety. Record the observation date because markets and currency conversion change. For U.S. listings, a year range beneath the country marks the issue family, not a verified year for that individual stamp. Dealer abbreviations such as OG (original gum), NH (never hinged), NG (no gum), and VF (very fine) are retained for source matching; inspect each lot page before treating those labels as a grade.

A worked comparison: a familiar design can mislead

The list includes several 1913 Australian Kangaroo and Map stamps. Their prices differ even within that one design family because denomination, shade and condition are different. A photograph may suggest the series but cannot establish every watermark or perforation. Identify the precise stamp and read the linked listing before using one row as a comparison.

The same principle appears in the 1840 British entries. A damaged Penny Black is a different commercial proposition from a sound example with desirable margins and cancellation. A dramatic number in a list does not transfer automatically to a stamp with a similar picture. Think of each row as evidence about one offered specimen.

What to record for your own stamp

Make a small evidence record before looking at more prices. Photograph the front and back in even light, retain the original album position, and note country, denomination, visible date, perforations, watermark if known, cancellation, gum and faults. Do not remove a stamp from a cover or soak it merely to see the reverse; the postal context may matter.

Once the identity is plausible, compare like with like: same catalog reference, same variety, same mint or used state, and a similar grade. Keep the source URL, date, currency and price type beside each comparable. A range built from several genuinely similar sales is more defensible than one attractive asking price.

From one stamp to a whole collection

A price list is especially easy to misuse with a full album. Adding individual retail asking prices assumes every item can be identified, sold separately, and found in the same condition.
