How do you measure a stamp perforation gauge?

Stamp perforation gauge is the number of perforation holes or teeth across a 2 centimeter span. Align a physical gauge with the holes, use a calibrated scan, or count across an accurately measured 2 centimeter edge. Measure horizontal and vertical sides separately because they may differ.

A phone photo without a scale reference can show the shape and regularity of the perforations, but it cannot prove an exact physical gauge. Use the photo result to narrow the possibilities, then verify the measurement before assigning a catalog variety.

Perforation gauge describes how many holes occur in a 2 cm span. A photo without a known scale cannot support an exact physical measurement.

Count holes across exactly 2 cm or photograph the stamp beside a properly aligned gauge.

Horizontal and vertical gauges may differ, creating a compound measurement such as 11 × 10½.

How to verify a perforation measurement

Accurate gauge work depends on a known scale, complete edges, and separate readings for each direction.

Use a reliable 2 cm reference

Place the stamp flat and align the center of the holes with a physical gauge. Do not stretch the reading to make it match a catalog entry.

  • Several holes aligned across the span

Measure both directions

Some stamps have compound perforations, such as a different horizontal and vertical gauge. Record the directions consistently.

  • Top or bottom edge for horizontal gauge
  • Left or right edge for vertical gauge
  • Irregular or damaged teeth noted separately

Use gauge as one clue

A matching gauge does not prove the issue on its own. Combine it with design, denomination, color, paper, watermark, overprint, and postal context.
